NRDC Chicago Office
The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) presented our studio with a project full of exciting challenges:
- What should the future of post-pandemic office space look like for a global, environmentally and socially engaged organization?
- How can the process foster connection and optimize space utilization by their staff?
- How can we achieve the highest environmental standards without exceeding budget constraints?
- Can we assist with organizing their budget, building program, and lease space negotiation while delivering the project on an extremely fast timeline?
Naturally, we love a good challenge, so we said YES!

The NRDC Chicago Office Space Expansion blends individual private areas with shared spaces that foster staff interaction, rebuilding a culture of connection and creativity. The design follows a simple rhythm—quiet space, gathering space, quiet space, gathering space—all linked to natural light and views, creating an environment that feels open and cohesive.
We drew from our expertise in material sustainability, collaborating with local fabricators to source materials from within 50 miles, not 500 miles. We also avoided finishes that emit harmful chemicals. Bio-mimicry inspired elements of the design, with plantings and forms that evoke the Chicago River and tell stories of past leaders, leaving subtle hints of their legacy.
None of this would have been possible without a strong understanding of facilities management, budget constraints, and project timelines. We worked closely with the NRDC team, their contractors, and project managers as well as IJ Design Studio, to bring this vision to life.
