MLK Jr. Central Library

The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library stands in the heart of Downtown DC as a gathering and support space for DC residents to enrich and nourish their lives and minds.

Recently renovated, the library looks to provide residents with services and tools needed to transform lives, and to build and support community throughout the District of Columbia.

Envisioned as a “Cabinet of Curiosities”, To Be Done (TBD) designed and fabricated a modular retail space that showcases the work of local makers, artists, and library exhibitions, as well as creating a space for gathering and relaxing.

Initial Concept

Made with locally sourced wind-downed local oak, the furniture elements include pivoting display shelves for books and local goods, storage for bulk materials, and seating for visitors to lounge on.

The retail units are movable and able to be configured in a variety of options to best suit the needs of the library and local vendors, offering a solution that integrates display, commerce, and play.

With the library expected to fully open the summer of 2021, the fabricated pieces will aid in fostering local small businesses, and help connect library patrons with the art and design community of the District of Columbia.
